Self Introduction No.6: Yuki Kanayama

Updated: Jun 27, 2018

Please Introduce yourself !

My name is Yuki Kanayama. I’m a university student in Tokyo. There are two reasons for

participating in this program. First, I want to be a challenger who is willing to fail. I want

to make the most of four years in the university. Also, I want to be a person who can

express his opinion in English. Although I spent a lot of time learning English, I don’t

have enough time to speak English. Therefore, I think that this is a good chance for me to

use English. As for the resolution, I’m going to speak up as often as possible so that many

people can understand what I think. I have never studied abroad so this is the first time

for me to discuss social issues with foreigners in English. Anyway, I hope this program

will help me improve my English and I will make friends with a lot of foreigners.

What is your Table Topic?

What do you think about your table topic so far and what is the goal of your table?

We will study the impact of religions on people. The problem is very difficult to deal with

especially for Japanese like me, who have been indifferent to religions. The reason I am

interested in this topic is that recently I have noticed the word “religious conflicts” pop

up in news program, magazines and so on. However, I realized that I didn’t have enough

knowledge to understand such problems. I think that it plays an important role in

interacting with foreigners, and therefore, it will be getting much more vital in our lives,

although the number of religious conflicts seems to decline. Seen from the outside,

religious violent is very hard to find out, so we have to learn about it and should be aware

what is going on inside. Apparently, this kind of problem is too hard to solve. For

example, when I searched on the internet about Buddhism, I found that Buddhist actually

took violent actions against other people, not only Rohingya issue in Myanmar. I didn’t

know that before. I hope that I, who don’t believe in any religion, will be able to see the

problem from a neutral viewpoint by learning about various kinds of religions. Honestly,

the biggest event which attracted me to this topic is that, when I went to India, I got very

frustrated to be suspended for cows in the middle of the road! I wonder why many

people could see it as usual!
