Self introduction No.12 : Kimberly Soo

Please introduce yourself!

Hi! I’m Kimberly and I study at Victoria University. I’m originally from Auckland, but I moved to live and study in Wellington a few years ago. I decided to apply for ISC because it sounded like a great way to experience Japan and an awesome opportunity to bond with new people. I visited Japan in 2017 and have been itching to go back ever since. ISC combines my love of debate, discussion, and discovery with a country that I’m excited to explore.

What do you think about your table topic?

The field of genetic engineering is a really fascinating one. It involves everything from science to politics, ethics and economics. It’s a really broad topic with a lot to unpack, and so much to ponder and discuss. The more we try to answer questions, the more questions there seem to be. So far, it has been really interesting to just listen to different people’s opinions and their personal justifications. The conference is already proving to be a fantastic way to think outside the box and consider another person’s point of view. Discussing big topics like this one with new people is fun, and I think it’s good to challenge your own values and ideals every now and then. Remaining civil and respectful while defending your own beliefs and principles can be hard to balance, but I think my table is doing a really great job so far! The prospect of scientific progress is exciting and there’s still so much for us to cover in our discussions, so I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and being able to have these conversations in real life.
