2. Eligibility

  • You must be dedicated, motivated, and responsible during all activities of the conference.

  • You must be enrolled in a high school, college, university or graduate school outside of Japan, and be above 18 years old as of June 1st, 2022. 

  • You must have a proficient level of English to be able to join academic discussions in English.

 

Note: Since the conference will be held online and offline hybrid, participants will need a stable internet connection. The application used for the video conference will be “Zoom”. Please download the application prior to the event.

3.Application Period

March 10 – April 17, 2022 at 23:59 (Japan Standard Time)

We will close the application form at the designated time, so please be careful of the time upon submitting your application form. 

 

Note that this application is for International Resident Participants (IRP). The application for Japanese Resident Participants (JRP) will be opened later during April 18 – May 20, 2022.

4.Application Procedures

  • All the responses must be in English

  • You will be asked to upload a picture of your Student ID

  • You will be required to choose up to 2 tables of your choice and respond to table-specific questions of the 2 tables you have chosen.

Questions that will appear in the application form:

 

  • General Application Questions

    • What is your reason for applying to ISC68?

    • What is your goal in attending ISC68? How do you intend to achieve your goal?

    • What do you think is important when working as a team?

    • What do you keep in mind when discussing with someone whom you have never been in contact with?  

  • Table-specific Questions (Since you will choose up to only 2 tables, you will only answer 2 sets of questions from this list)

      • What is your experience in journalism? Whether you are studying journalism or working as a journalist or simply are interested in the field - please let us know  your experiences!​

      • What examples of fake news have you stumbled upon on social media platforms and how were you able to identify them?

      • Do you think education can help increase media literacy skills and prevent fake news & disinformation? If so, provide your idea on what kind of educational program would like to make together as part of the conference?

      • Why are you interested in the Arctic issues? In the Arctic, there are still many unknown problems that need to be solved; some of which are environmental issues, national security, and global cooperation.  What kind of problem are you most interested in and why?

      • Talking about national interest, each country is seeking their own interests. When two or more countries are having conflicts or war, how would you evaluate the function of International law? Are there any imperfections or loopholes that you found in the current law?

      • The situation of territorial claims exists in both the Arctic and the Antarctic. In the Antarctic, the sector principle is used as a means of resolving the issue; however, there is no such thing in the Arctic. Do you think a sector principle could also be adopted in the Arctic? How would you comment on the sector principle in the Antarctic and do you think it is a good idea for a nominated country to manage a piece of land?

      • (Optional) Please tell us more of your interested aspects regards to the International law of the sea!

      • Today, the concept of smart city is emerging in various contexts. One of them is in the context of mobility. With your own words, can you explain what you know about smart mobility? Do you think smart mobility can transform the way we live in our city?​

      • Do you think that technology is the only tool/way to implement smart mobility in cities? If yes, why? And if not, what are the other possible tools/ ways? 

      • Using your own city or hometown as an example, is there any existing smart technology and/ or innovation implementation for mobility and/ or accessibility enhancement? What problems and/ or advantages arise within the implementation? (e.g. integrated application or public transportation, accessible design for people with wheelchairs, etc.)

      • What is Social Work and how can it foster the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

      • The ageing population may symbolize the development of public health and economic growth. However, national economies and society also face several serious issues of the ageing population. In this regard, what are the major challenges faced by the elderly? (Any aspect is welcomed. You may take examples of discrimination from your daily life and exclusions of elderly that have noticed).

      • How do you believe different stakeholders working for the welfare of the elderly contribute to adopting the policies and services to respond to the changing age structure? 

5.Selection Process

First Screening ( – April 12, 2022): Written application screening via your response to the form

Second Screening (April 13 – 22, 2022): Online Interview via Zoom

6.Participation Fee

5000 yen

  • The entire program fee

  • Mentorship program by experts 

  • Certificate provided by ISC after completion of the program

7.Tentative Schedule

  • April 17: Deadline of the submission 

  • June 25-26: Advance Conference 

  • June : Monthly Study Session

  • July: Monthly Study Sessions and Cultural Event

  • August 6-13: Main Conference (from 4pm - 10 pm JST every day)
